Taiwan's creativity obviously is weak , here discuss Taiwan's papers  (randomly chosen) on creativity-related topics.  Words inside () are traditional Chinese.

paper's view

The website's view

the title/theme is talking about comic image in the art.

cartoon focuses on content, instead of surface ―  drawing skill/image.  Why do university papers focus on cartoon’s minor part the surface ( image)? instead of major part witty creativity?

Many fine arts are counted as cartoons, because cartoons are defined as “satire” or "exaggerated/distorted appearance …"
It's upside down !

Picasso’s cartoons are too simple,  not up to entry level of typical cartoons (satire, humorous and witty cartoons), although his drawing skill is excellent.

Graffito challenges and criticizes the authority in power.

Cartoons can pushed US president to step down,  leads to a global crisis, and influence Russia's and China's policy  leader's image on cartoons is not allowed.

Can graffito work out these?

satire cartoons basically have 2 types of expressions: (1) with captions (2) exaggerated & distorted

In many witty / intellectual cartoons, captions and distorted images ... are not necessary

Cartoon is not main-stream …

Cartooning creativity can be used in many cultural fields like advertisement, movies, ... even Olympic opening/closing ceremony.

"humor" is about "creativity", "cartoon" is more than "humor".

The paper uses the title “cartoon” or “comic “, but only talk about “comic strips” or Japanese name "long story manga", ( not gag cartoons, political/editorial cartoons, 4 panel cartoons, caricature), you can't find paper's name in English (Taiwan's papers usually have English names).

Abstract

Taiwan's popular cartoons still have not shown an unique Taiwanese style. Compared to the foreign cartoons, there are no differentiation and identification    o Taiwanese cartoons.  The local Taiwanese cartoons are not only lack of recognition, but also the cultural elements to help develop our own styles.  Because of the Greater China conscious suppression, the local Taiwanese culture and value were deliberately ignored …

Although the scholarly paper applauds Liu's Taiwanese style, but ......  this website comments:

(1)   Page 50: that paper takes 2 of Liu's one-panel cartoons as examples,  the first one “Zon Qua catches devils” is China's culture , the second one is ordinary , not as witty as western cartoons.  so, not very Taiwanese style.

(2)   Page 51: that paper takes Mr. Liu’s a 4-panel cartoon as an example, which is sort of witty, but it's western style, not very Taiwanese.

(3)   The expression of face and clothing image in Liu’s cartoons indeed is Taiwanese style ―   but it's the style in early days, not modern Taiwanese style.

In "Conclusion" chapter, these 2 scholars (authors) state juries in Taiwan's largest Ads contest already found out all those Taiwanese advertisements that crib/plagiarized/learnt from Japanese works.(「結論與建議 研究發現」皆明載:「在分析過程中,研究者更發現日本廣告中有為數不少之似曾相識鏡頭,原來是已被台灣廣告彷效或抄襲而為吾人所熟知者,這些成為取法典範的影片幾乎全屬感性訴求,可見日本在這方面的創意發揮是較台灣精緻和高明的。

However, some Taiwan's advertisements in that contest are similar to western creativities, the paper did not mention anything about it.

Most important paper on ads image metaphor, printed in the most important periodicals  in Taiwan,<Journal of Advertising & Public Relations> and <Journal of Journalism>, includes some examples which are suspect to be crib or to be "coincidently" similar to old ones", this kind of studies can not save Taiwan's major problem ―  shortage of ads creativity.

The artists of Dada and Pop transformed the comics to graphic messages with social and timely meanings, which means they are no longer just a funny entertainment sketch.(達達與普普的藝術家讓漫畫不再只是輕鬆、詼諧的娛樂小品,而是具有社會意涵、時代意義的圖像訊息。)

All "Arts"  works appeared in the section 4-1-4 and 4-1-5 in that paper  just applied  comics "surface", not cartoons' "soul" ―  sharp witty /  intellectual ideas.  Cartooning certainly is not just “a funny entertainment sketch”, it delivers all kinds of messages   very clear, brave and influential enough as a landmark of nation's democracy & freedom of speech .

    (2)  cartoons function better than "arts".  i.e., Picasso was angry at a 'senator' so as to drew a picture that the 'senator' was digging his nostrils and scratching feet by his fingers, this idea is not up to an entry-level satiric cartoon.

(1)    The 1st Kuso example in this paper is a lung-shaped ashtray by Finding Cheska 2006, but in fact this idea had already been seen in an ad. by Singapore Cancer Society. A number of scholarly books also already discussed about it. For instance, “Humor in the Advertising business: Theory, Practice and wit”, by Fred K Beard PhD., University of Oklahoma, USA. “……resonant wit, such as the Singapore Cancer Society ad. Is generated by a combination of arousal-safety and incongruity-resolution, you may also recognize Raskin’s actual versus nonfactual contrast in this ad. …… the visual metaphor gets the point across pretty clearly, and the thematic relatedness of the humor obvious.” This ashtray is not a disordered, negative significant, no inner content, “perhaps creative” Kuso stuff. Instead, this “subculture” can lead to excellent & mainstream ad.

(2)    Some other examples like leg-shaped chopsticks, tool-shaped knives & forks are not good designs.  The definition of “Kuso” is too mixed.

(1)   Page 98 : Japan's Yomiuri int'l cartoon contest is widely considered as global highest level cartoon contest, so China's cartoon & animation exhibition should take it as a lesson and broaden their vision, …… Many years ago , this site already found a number of Yomiuri's top-award cartoons are old ones (coincidence or cribs), the reason probably lies in their juries (a big team) are not experts in cartooning field and all are Japanese, at present this Japanese contest already went to an end.

(2)   Page 104: Due to Chinese cartoonists’ impetuous mind and shortage of ability…… China’s traditional cartoons are no longer fresh, artistic, and can't shock/impact readers/viewers.

Chinese cartoonists did better jobs than Taiwanese cartoonists in world competitions.

(3)   Page 93 :  The reason that Taiwan's cartoon books are very popular in mainland China in recent 10 years is its creativity (10

One of feature of black humor is “hard to understand”

The degree for black humor : Schadenfreude > vagaries > derision > appreciation & identification

"Hard to understand" is not the feature of good humour or may  not be a good black humor. (「

The paper jumps to conclusion by not many examples , I believe(黑色幽默的程度高低是幸災樂禍>異想天開>顛覆嘲弄>體會認同  :  未由足夠例子下結論)
