 舉世聞名的M.D. Anderson 癌症中心的終身教授 、 11次榮獲全美最優秀醫師  的韓裔金義信(Euishin Edmund Kim, M.D. )教授，在<打敗癌症的力量>一書中，呼籲韓國人不要二地奔波、跑來美國就醫， 因為韓國的醫療技術不輸任何一國。 台灣榮總 唐宗詠醫師 在蘋果日報(6-22-2015)提到，許多國外僑胞或永久居留權者「專程」回台就醫，因為台灣醫療比美國廉價許多，在美國打個石膏的要價， 幾乎是台灣骨科住院醫師的月薪。 http://www.appledaily.com.tw/realtimenews/article/new/20150622/633042/  (包山包海包全球的台灣健保) 。華盛頓郵報(3-1-2019)報導如果沒有美國保險，  MRI、 Harvoni肝炎療程、C-section剖腹產費用在台灣與美國相差3~16倍(分別是美元$ 288 vs $1,119、   美元 2,132  vs  $32,114、   美元$1,404 vs $15,106. ref. to https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2019/03/01/an-american-got-sick-taiwan-he-came-back-with-tale-horrors-socialized-medicine/  )。華盛頓郵報(Washington Post, 2-28-2019 "An American got sick in Taiwan.  He came back with a tale of the ‘horrors of socialized medicine" )  以"socialized medicine"稱呼台灣醫療健保系統，台灣不比美國富裕，但健保花費較低、享受較高，一名得到stomach flu 的美國人，到醫院後20分鐘就獲得診察。Finance Yahoo, 12-30-2020 (finance.yahoo.com/news/retire-taiwan-costs-visas-more-215449948.html ): 台灣在Knoema.com的醫療保健效率指數中排名全球第11位，而Numbeo則將該國的醫療保健系統列為全球最佳。 台灣不為外籍人士提供免費醫療服務，但付款將以共付額的形式支付。通常，您可以期望支付10％到20％的治療費用 (payments will come in the form of copayments. Usually, you can expect to pay 10% to 20% of treatment. You may also have to pay out-of-pocket costs if you choose any other healthcare treatment outside of the NHI coverage...)。

除了便宜，台灣醫療也有一定水準。美國國會聽證關於台灣醫療健保的書面證詞，已列為國會正式紀錄。其中提及台灣只用了美國四分之一的費用，但健康成果，e.g.,平均壽命、嬰兒死亡率、產婦死亡率等，都比美國要好。健保實施前十年，全體國民平均壽命增加1.8歲，而實施健保之後十年，國人平均壽命增加2.9歲。(http://blog.udn.com/yestaipei/18685477) 此外，根據若干論文，台灣的醫學，如對肝癌的研究，還曾領先全球。

　

然而，台灣的醫院醫師也有許多缺失甚至是嚴重缺失:

★  1.  醫生-病患比率偏低，護士也很短缺。台灣醫療系統考量預算，即意味著不考慮風險因素（外科手術，內科醫學，婦科，兒科，急診），將影響藥物，手術和診斷工具（X光vs. MRI）的使用。 根據Wikipedia (2021-5-5) 與 Liberty Times (2020-1-6),  台灣的醫師病患比例 (doctor-to-population ratio, see pic. below) 幾乎在亞洲墊底，輸給日本, 南韓, 北韓, 新加坡, 中國大陸, ...  Health Care Costs也輸給它們，WEF<Travel and tourism competitiveness report> (released at 9-4-2019): 台灣的 Health & Hygiene (健康衛生 包括"醫師密度Physician density" ) 分數 6.0, 輸給 Korea, Japan, Mongolia(蒙古);   WEF<Travel and tourism competitiveness report> (released at 4-6-2017), 報導台灣的 "Physician density" 只排名全球第 65 (比2015年的No. 57 退步)。自由時報(LTN, 2020-1-6):政府表示將重新檢討每年新增醫師1,300人的上限 , 然而，自由時報 (opinion, 12-22-2020, https://talk.ltn.com.tw/article/paper/1420360 王宏育) : Dr. Chao A. Hsiung, 熊昭 的論文結論寫到：「整體西醫師在區域醫院至2020年每年增加1家的情境，可能會出現西醫師人力供給短缺 其餘情境之人力供給大於需求」。 台灣平均一位醫師服務不到500位民眾（台北市不到250人），每年畢業約1500位醫師， 台灣的問題是增多醫師會增加健保體系負擔，且醫師患不均不患寡，弱勢偏鄉相對不足 。 學者鄭英耀也批評北南(包括離島山區)醫療資源失衡。

★  2.   台灣沒有很好的醫院 /  台灣僅一醫院入選 Newsweek's "World Best Hospitals" top 250，但亞洲的新加坡、日本、南韓 有多間醫院，甚至印度也有一間入選  (see 上表).  台灣高等教育近年來在國際評鑑 Nature Index (2020), Times Higher Education-World University Rank (2021),  Quacquarelli Symonds UK (2021) full text , etc.  大約只排名亞太各國之 No. 8 ~ No. 10, 若以入選大學數字算就更糟了。 台灣也沒有排名 "best healthcare in the world, 2021" by world population review 的前100名(worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/best-healthcare-in-the-world).

根據Lancet2017年公布的全球健康照顧評估Healthcare Access and Quality Index (based on mortality from causes amenable to personal health care in 195 countries and territories, 1990–2015 : a novel analysis from the Global Burden of Disease Study   2015),  選擇32種只要預防措施與有效醫療照顧就可避免死亡的疾病，統計分析共25年, 結果台灣僅排名 45th ，而且一些慢性病得分很低 甚至不及格， 例如., 白血病Leukemia 49分,  慢性腎臟病Kidney disease 50分, 膽囊Gallbladder & biliary 57分, 高血壓性心臟病Hypertensive Heart Disease 60分,  糖尿病diabetes mellitus 58, etc.  請詳下表:

台灣的NM skin cancer黑色素瘤 (20分)  , congenital heart  先天性心臟病(69 ), chronic kidney慢性腎臟病 (55)  , Diabetes   糖尿病(60 ), gallbladder 膽囊病( 64 ), hypertensive HD  (61), stroke 中風 (63)  , Lower respiratory infections (LRIs), peptic ulcer消化性潰瘍, 都是低分，而hernia  疝气,Diphtheria白喉, Tetanus破伤风, URls  上呼吸道感染, Maternal disorders妊娠併發症, leukemia白血病, chronic respiratory  慢性阻塞性肺疾病屬高分。台灣lancet healthcare access and quality index (Jun. 2018)排名在澳、日、紐、新加坡、韓國、黎巴嫩等亞太國家之後。
